At the end of the lower hallway, you will discover a skeleton holding a journal that contains the key to the puzzle. The first page of this book displays a specific colored symbol, which varies between game playthroughs due to procedural generation.
This distinct symbol acts as your primary visual key for the rest of the puzzle. Pay close attention to its unique color and geometry, as you will need to match it with items in the main chamber. Taking a quick screenshot or noting down the shape saves time during exploration.
Matching the Burial Shrouds and Symbols
After checking the journal, head back into the tomb area where numerous mummified remains rest on stone altars. Each body is wrapped in a patterned cloth or shroud, and directly above each coffin is a glowing floating rune. You must locate the four bodies covered in shrouds that display the exact symbol found in the book.
Each time you find a matching shroud, write down or memorize the specific floating rune positioned above that altar. Because there are always four corresponding burial sites, you will collect four distinct symbols in total. Disregarding non-matching shrouds helps prevent input errors at the main mechanism.
Operating the Dial Mechanism
With all four symbols identified, return to the upper balcony where the circular dial mechanism is located. You must align the four gathered symbols along the top vertical line of the dial. Fortunately, the order in which you place the four symbols on the wheel does not matter, as long as all four correct glyphs are aligned.
Once all four selected glyphs sit in the top position, confirm your entry to unlock the heavy door. Solving this door allows access to valuable loot, including the Blood Ring and access to deeper puzzle sections. If the mechanism fails to open, double-check that every symbol matches a blanket corresponding to the book's initial design.
Navigating the Invisible Bridges and Saw Traps
Completing the symbol dial is only one part of fully conquering The Lament. Beyond the main door, players will encounter additional obstacles, such as floor plates connected to saw traps and invisible bridges across floating pillars.
